Sex Sells and We Like it.

Skin, sweat, good-looking girls and guys, you see it blasted every where and it will turn heads.

It doesn’t have to be a product that involves this image, but when you add sex into the mix you better believe people will start listening. They say sex sells because it literally does. By using sex in advertisements  humour, sensuality and attraction is added to the product to make it more interesting to consumers.

In professor Kathy Patterson’s class, we learned the eight appeal techniques that advertisers use to reach their audience. Since sex in advertising has been around from the beginning of marketing, it continues to be successful.

Advertisers have become more creative and discrete in their approach of selling products using sex to catch the audience’s attention. Dentyne Ice gum is notorious for taking this approach when it comes to their advertisements. The Business Insider says “sexual desire is built into the reptilian brain. Because people’s thoughts come from inside their own heads, they extrapolate their feelings to situations that do not apply.”

When watching the Dentyne Ice commercial, they trick consumers into believing they are watching a condom commercial but in the end it is only a chewing gum advertisement. They use sex to attract the audience causing people to fantasize what is actually going on in the commercial.  With the slogan “practice safe breath” how could you not think of practice safe sex!

So please practice safe advertising.
